Si Nonna’s – The Original Sourdough Pizza

Si Nonna’s โ€“ The Original Sourdough Pizza is a pioneering pizzeria in India, specializing in authentic Neapolitan sourdough pizzas. Founded by Ayush Jatia in 2022, the restaurant’s concept is inspired by traditional Italian culinary practices, utilizing a sourdough starter that traces its origins back 500 years to Naples, Italy.

The name “Si Nonna’s” translates to “Yes, Grandma’s,” reflecting a commitment to preserving and sharing time-honored recipes and techniques passed down through generations. This dedication is evident in their menu, which emphasizes the rich flavors and textures characteristic of Neapolitan sourdough pizza.

In Mumbai, Si Nonna’s has established multiple branches to cater to pizza enthusiasts across the city. Their locations include:

1. Jio World Plaza, BKC

2. Kamala Mills, Lower Parel

3. Fun Republic, Andheri

4. Inorbit Mall, Vashi

5. Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla

To celebrate Yuvenโ€™s fantastic annual day performance, we headed to Si Nonna’s at Inorbit Mall, Vashi. The restaurant is located right opposite the food court, featuring an open setup where the temperature remains pleasant thanks to the mallโ€™s-controlled environment.

2nd floor, Inorbit Vashi

We arrived around lunchtime, at 1 oโ€™clock. The restaurant was empty, which was expected on a Monday afternoon. We chose a cozy spot near the open kitchen, giving us a clear view of the food preparation. There was plenty of seating available, including tables overlooking the mall’s exterior.

Ambience

Si Nonna’s offers a warm and inviting vibe with its minimalistic yet well-thought-out setup. The open layout creates an airy, casual atmosphere thatโ€™s perfect for relaxed dining. At the heart of the restaurant sits a prominent tile-lined oven, exuding rustic charm and filling the space with the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked sourdough pizzas. A small bar setup adds a modern touch, with beverages displayed to complement the meal. The seating, while simple, is comfortable and functional, ensuring guests enjoy their time with ease.

Food

We began our meal with a Panuozzoโ€”a baked pizza sandwich stuffed with cherry tomatoes, olives, lots of basil leaves, and cheese. The crust had a perfect balance of crunch and softness, and olive oil generously oozed through each bite. However, we felt that fewer basil leaves would have enhanced the overall flavor.

When placing the order, we were asked if we wanted a dip. We requested the basil pesto dip, but to our surprise, the dip was served alongside the pizza, leaving us unsure if this was a mistake or standard practice.

Next, we ordered a Nonnaโ€™s Cooler to accompany our meal. Unfortunately, the drink was brought out only after we finished our sandwich. While the cooler was slightly sourer than expected, I personally enjoyed its refreshing taste.

Although we had ordered our pizza in advance, the staff thoughtfully asked whether we wanted it served immediately or later. The pizza took an additional 15 minutes to arrive, but the wait was absolutely worth it.

At Si Nonna’s, pizzas are referred to by numbers instead of names. We chose the 4th pizza, featuring a thin sourdough crust topped with:

  • Four cheeses: Blue cheese, Ricotta, Aged Parmesan, and Mozzarella made with cowโ€™s milk
  • Jalapeรฑo salsa
  • Cherry tomato confit
  • Fresh basil
  • A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil

The pizza was perfectly baked, and pairing it with the basil pesto dip elevated the experience.

To wrap up the meal, we saved room for dessertโ€”Tiramisu. It was an absolute delight, with the perfect balance of moisture, sweetness, and coffee powder. This was, hands down, one of the best tiramisus weโ€™ve had so far.

Service

The overall service was smooth, except for the delay in bringing out the pizza. Considering the restaurant was empty and we had placed the order early, this was slightly concerning. That said, the staff were prompt, attentive, and happy to answer all our questions. They even informed us about a kidโ€™s package, where children can bake their own pizzasโ€”something Yuven would surely enjoy next time! Another notable aspect was that all the staff members at Si Nonnaโ€™s were women, which was impressive and inspiring.

Overall Impression

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the experience at Si Nonna’s. From the Panuozzo to the Tiramisu, every dish left us satisfied. The warm, minimalistic ambience paired with good food makes this restaurant a must-visit. We are already looking forward to exploring different dishes at other outlets of Si Nonna’s!
