Harmony in Diversity: The Dakshinamurty Temple (EME Temple), Vadodara

The Dakshinamurty Temple of EME School is a symbol of religious harmony. It was conceived, designed, and constructed in the year 1965 under the patronage of the founder commandant of EME School, the late Brig AF Eugene, who was a Christian.

The design is only one of its kind in the country, in which Brig Eugene has tried to harmonize all the religions. The temple is of aluminum structure and was built by voluntary labor of officers, jawans, and civilians of EME School over 14 months.

The temple is located amidst five banyan trees called Panch Vati. The aesthetically planned surrounding makes the spot an ideal place for meditation. The temple structure has the symbol of five religions:-

  • Its four entrance doors made in semi-elliptical shape represent Jain architecture.
  • Sabha Mandap (prayer hall) in the shape of a geodesic dome depicts Islam.
  • The structure on the top of the dome with golden color bears a resemblance to the shape used in various Buddhist monuments.
  • The tower with a height of 70 feet represents Christianity.
  • The ‘Kalash’ on the top of the tower represents Hinduism.

The main deity of the temple is Shiva in the Gyana Dakshinamurty form (Shiva as Universal Teacher) is most appropriate for this prestigious military training institution.

The temple is a symbol of the peaceful coexistence of all communities, irrespective of their religious faith. It represents communal harmony and religious tolerance.
