As we awoke to the gentle patter of rain on the windows, we knew our dreams of a beach sunrise in Pondicherry had to wait. The monsoon season had veiled the sunrise in gray clouds, but we embraced the tranquility it brought.

To begin our day, we opted for the comforts of the hotel and found solace in the terrace pool, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Bay of Bengal. While witnessing the sunrise was on our Pondicherry to-do list, nature had other plans, concealing the sun behind a curtain of raindrops.
Eager to explore Pondicherry’s charming streets, we decided to rent a two-wheeler, a choice inspired by the exorbitant auto-rickshaw prices we encountered the previous day. Our hotel recommended a reliable rental service, and in no time, we were handed the keys to a Honda Dio for the next three days.
After a refreshing swim, we indulged in a delicious breakfast and a brief rest. Later, we set out for lunch at the iconic Cafe des Arts, located in the White Town, taking a detour to visit a couple of churches, though they were closed during the afternoon.

Our plan evolved to a leisurely exploration of the quaint and picturesque streets of the White Town, capturing the vibrant atmosphere with our camera.
As the clock approached 4 o’clock, we embarked on our main mission for the day – visiting the iconic churches of Pondicherry and experiencing the beauty they held.
Notre Dame des Anges:

Our first stop was Notre Dame des Anges, a remarkable example of Greco-Roman architecture. It stood as a timeless beauty, adorned with a central chapel flanked by two pillars that once held now-silent clocks, which used to chime the Ave Maria every two hours. This sacred sanctuary faced east, offering serene views of the Bay of Bengal. While the original altar housed a statue of Our Lady of Angels, in modern times, it cradled a Holy Cross. The church also graced a statue of Joan of Arc, gifted by Francois Gaudart, the then Mayor of Puducherry in 1919. Its twin tower featured stained glass windows painted in vibrant red, blue, and yellow hues, casting a magical glow over the interior. The church’s history was rich, with an interesting transformation from the “White Chapel.”
Immaculate Conception Cathedral:
Our next stop was the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. This magnificent cathedral stood as a testament to perseverance, with a history dating back to the arrival of Jesuit Fathers in 1689. Facing various challenges, a grand cathedral now marked the site. The journey included the demolition of two previous churches, followed by the commencement of the current cathedral’s construction in 1765, concluding in 1791. Subsequent additions included the bell tower, choir loft, and a sanctuary renovation in 1970. The cathedral was not only a historic and spiritual landmark but also one of the oldest tourist attractions in Pondicherry, honored by visits from luminaries like Mother Teresa.
To add some energy to our day, we took a delightful break at The Indian Kaffe Express, sipping on hot chocolates that were as yummy as they were refreshing.
Evening at the Promenade:
As the day drew to a close, we positioned ourselves at the Promenade, capturing the spectacular sunset while savoring our hot chocolates. After the sun dipped below the horizon, we made our way to the French War Memorial and Gandhi’s Statue, both beautifully located at the Promenade. What’s truly remarkable about the Promenade is the absence of any vehicles, allowing us to stroll carefree.
As the day concluded, we returned to our hotel for a light dinner, savoring the memories of our day in the heart of Pondicherry. The allure of this coastal town continued to captivate us, and we looked forward to the adventures awaiting us on day 3. Pondicherry had already etched a special place in our hearts with its blend of culture and beauty, and we were excited to see what the next day held for us.
