Pondicherry Diaries – Day 1: Mahabalipuram enroute Pondicherry

Our journey to the charming town of Pondicherry commenced with eager anticipation and the promise of creating beautiful memories. Join us as we recount our experiences from Day 1, filled with the thrill of travel and exploration.

Early Morning Flight from Mumbai to Chennai

Our day started with an early morning flight from the bustling city of Mumbai to the coastal city of Chennai. We chose to fly with IndiGo, not only for its smooth travel experience but also for the delightful in-flight meal service.

Upon our arrival at Chennai airport, we took some time to freshen up and rejuvenate ourselves. We believe that starting a journey feeling refreshed and ready is essential, and the airport facilities made this a breeze.

While we eagerly awaited our pre-booked cab, a minor discrepancy in the details shared caused a moment of uncertainty. However, our experiences in travel have taught us to adapt and remain composed in such situations. Our taxi, arranged through MakeMyTrip, eventually arrived, and we were soon on our way to embark on our adventure.

Chennai to Mahabalipuram

Our journey towards Pondicherry took us through Mahabalipuram, a coastal town renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed monuments. The drive took approximately an hour. We decided to explore the town’s incredible historic sites, which included breathtaking stone carvings and intricately carved temples. Upon arrival, we purchased tickets and hired a guide to delve into the history of these magnificent structures.

Our exploration included visits to Krishna’s Butter Ball, Koneri Mandapam, Ganesha Ratha, Varaha Cave, Trimurti Cave, Arjuna’s Penance, Panch Pandav Mandapam, Sthalasayana Perumal Temple, and Dolotsave Mandapam. While there was a lighthouse on the premises, we chose not to visit it. We also indulged in some ice cream to beat the warmth of the day.

Shore Temple

Following this, we headed to the Shore Temple, where renovation work was in progress. Here, they offered golf cart rides for a nominal fee. The temple’s proximity to the seashore, with its colossal waves, provided a memorable experience. We also had the opportunity to purchase beautiful handmade jewelry from local vendors. Our visit concluded with a glimpse of the Five Rathas and a distant view of the lighthouse.
