An Evening in Daman: Aviary and Jampore Beach

On the last weekend of November, we had the opportunity to spend a delightful Saturday evening in Daman. Our itinerary included a visit to India’s largest exotic bird aviary and Jampore Beach.

After a sumptuous lunch, we got ready and began our drive around 2:30 PM. The well-maintained roads and impressive cleanliness of Daman immediately caught our attention. Our first destination was the newly opened bird aviary near Jampore Beach, which operates from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM in the evenings.

Exploring India’s Largest Exotic Bird Aviary

By 3:15 PM, we reached the aviary’s ticket counter, where a small queue of 4–5 people had formed. I was surprised to learn that only digital payments were accepted, with no option for cash transactions. Tickets were reasonably priced at ₹100 for adults (12+ years), ₹50 for children (5–12 years), and free for kids under five. The process was efficient despite the single ticket window, and the queue moved quickly. Adjacent to the counter, a souvenir shop offered small mementos.

Although there was no dedicated parking for the aviary, ample open space nearby allowed visitors to park at their own risk. After collecting our tickets, we began exploring the lush green park, which was beautifully maintained with well-laid pathways and abundant greenery.

A short walk brought us to the main entrance, where we took some photographs before starting our adventure. Clear signboards helped guide visitors through the expansive park. The aviary is still a work in progress, with ongoing efforts to construct structures, plant trees, and create nesting spaces for the birds. A drinking water unit is conveniently located just before the main entrance, while washroom facilities are available after entering. At the aviary exit, a few shops have been constructed, although they are not yet operational.

The aviary spans a vast area divided into three sections. One of the highlights is a small pond housing ducks and swans. Numerous trees with name tags dotted the landscape, and bird posters along the pathways provided fascinating information about the various species.

The ambiance was magical, with birds actively flying around, chirping melodiously, and enjoying their meals. The entire park is enclosed by a net, giving the birds the freedom to fly within a safe environment. Some birds were temporarily kept in cages as a precautionary measure to ensure they were healthy before integrating them with others.

One particularly curious bird stood out for its mischievous behavior—it allowed people to approach but playfully nipped at them with its beak. While it was heartening to see efforts to replicate a natural habitat, it also served as a reminder that these birds are still confined and unable to experience true freedom.

Bird Species in the Aviary

The aviary is home to a remarkable variety of birds. Some notable species include:

  • Golden Pheasant
  • Black Swan
  • Scarlet Macaw
  • Eclectus Parrot
  • Rainbow Lorikeet
  • Blue and Yellow Macaw
  • Channel-Billed Toucan
  • Sulfur-crested Cockatoo

With over 40 species, it’s a paradise for bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, and families seeking a unique, educational experience.

Jampore Beach Promenade and the Shiva Statue

After spending 1.5 hours in the aviary, we headed to the Jampore Beach promenade. Parking near the grand Shiva statue, we admired its intricate design and majestic appearance, especially when illuminated at night. The statue is located within the premises of a crematorium but is a striking landmark worth visiting.

We chose a spot on the promenade to enjoy a small picnic, a leisurely walk, and a breathtaking sunset. The area was clean, well-maintained, and lined with vendors selling snacks like Maggi, coconut water, raw mango, boiled corn, and soft drinks. A paid public restroom was also available, adding to the convenience.

A Scenic Drive and Dinner

As night fell, we drove from Jampore Beach to the Mirasol Resort, passing by the Daman Fort. The fort looked mesmerizing under the night lights; a sight we wished we had more time to explore. Our day concluded with a delightful dinner at Mirasol Resort before calling it a night.
