Madurodam : The highlight of the Den Haag

In the morning of our second and the last day in Den Haag, we woke up early, excited to visit Madurodam, a fascinating miniature park showcasing the Netherlands’ landmarks at a 1:25 scale.

Experiencing Madurodam

From windmills to tulip fields and the Rijksmuseum, the detailed models are captivating. Interactive displays and activities kept us engaged for 3โ€“4 hours. The experience was further enhanced by a souvenir store, kiosks, and a cozy cafรฉ, making our visit delightful.

We also watched five shows about Dutch history, adding depth to the visit. These shows transform Madurodam into much more than just a miniature park.

Here is a guide to the various shows and experiences that make Madurodam a must-visit destination. The shows run at fixed intervals in Dutch and English, and visitors must queue according to their language preference.

4. Waterwolf – Interactive Show: Conquering the Great Waters

The Waterwolf is a spectacular and educational experience highlighting the Netherlands’ epic battle against water. The show tells the story of how the Dutch reclaimed land from the Haarlemmermeer, a once-massive inland sea. Visitors are transported back to the 19th century as they witness the construction of the worldโ€™s largest steam-driven pumping station, the Cruquius.

6. Het verhaal van George (The Story of George) – A Tribute to a War Hero George Maduro

This poignant show honors George Maduro, the war hero Madurodam was named after. A native of Curaรงao, George Maduro was a law student who fought bravely against Nazi forces during World War II. He was eventually captured and tragically died in the Dachau concentration camp in 1945. His parents used their inheritance to commemorate his legacy to establish Madurodam as a living memorial.

Experience: Through emotional storytelling and visual presentations, this show recounts George Maduroโ€™s courageous life and the creation of Madurodam in his honor.

Madurodam also features interactive areas and shows that showcase Dutch inventions and innovations that have shaped the world. From the famous Delta Works, which protect the country from flooding to achievements in agriculture and technology, these exhibits celebrate Dutch ingenuity.

Experience: Visitors can participate in hands-on activities, such as controlling water flow, building dikes, or learning about renewable energy.

Bonus: We purchased a tulip brooch and a klomp for 1 euro each. Youโ€™ll need coins for the machines, though some accept cards.

The shows at Madurodam are an enriching and entertaining blend of history, technology, and culture. Whether youโ€™re fascinated by the Dutch struggle against water, want to fly across the country, or step back in time to relive history, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Farewell to The Hague

After collecting our luggage from the hotel, we booked an Uber to Den Haag Laan van NOI station to catch a train to Hoofddorp near Amsterdam. Purchasing tickets took longer than expected, but we eventually boarded the Sprinter for a 40-minute ride.

Upon arrival, we checked into the Novotel Schiphol, conveniently located within walking distance of the station. While Yuven and I opted to rest, Mihir went to meet an old friend, concluding the day.

The Hague, with its mix of history, modern attractions, and serene beauty, exceeded our expectations despite our revised plans. Itโ€™s a city that deserves more time to explore, and we hope to return someday.
