Downtown Little Rock turned out to be one of those destinations that quietly exceeds expectations. What we thought would be a simple city visit quickly became a full day of hands-on learning, local history, scenic riverfront walks, and even a free streetcar ride connecting two cities. Traveling as a family, we loved how walkable, relaxed, and genuinely engaging Downtown Little Rock felt—especially with attractions that worked just as well for kids as they did for adults.
If you’re looking for family-friendly things to do in Little Rock, this downtown itinerary covers museums, historic landmarks, hidden gems, and one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city.
Museum of Discovery: Interactive Science Fun for Kids and Adults

Our Downtown Little Rock exploration began at the Museum of Discovery, and honestly, this was one of the highlights of the trip—especially if you’re traveling with kids.
This hands-on science museum is packed with interactive exhibits that make learning fun. From physics to biology, every section encourages curiosity and experimentation. The Tesla coil demonstration was loud but absolutely unmissable—it grabbed everyone’s attention and was a fantastic way to explain electrical concepts engagingly.
You can easily spend 4–6 hours here without realizing how fast time flies. It’s a perfect stop for families looking for educational yet entertaining things to do in Downtown Little Rock.

Historic Arkansas Museum: Stepping Into Local Art and Living History

Our next stop was the Historic Arkansas Museum, a wonderful (and free!) place to explore Arkansas’s local art, culture, and 19th-century history.
The museum features preserved historic structures, period artifacts, and live historical demonstrations. While they offer a 45-minute guided tour every hour for a nominal fee of $2.50 per adult, we were short on time and had to skip it. That said, it’s firmly on our list for the next visit.

The absolute highlight here was the Blacksmith Shop. Watching a live demonstration of how nails were made centuries ago was fascinating, but what made it extra special was that my son actually got to try making a nail himself – and walked away with it as a souvenir. That experience alone made this stop unforgettable.

Old State House Museum: Exploring Arkansas’s Original Capitol Building

From there, we headed to the Old State House Museum, the original State Capitol of Arkansas and a key historical landmark in Downtown Little Rock.
We spent about an hour exploring the exhibits, which do a great job of walking visitors through Arkansas’s political and cultural history. The building itself is beautiful, and the exhibits are well laid out, making it easy to explore at your own pace.
If you enjoy history and iconic architecture, this is a must-visit stop.

H.U. Lee International Gate and Garden: A Hidden Downtown Gem

While walking from the Old State House Museum toward the riverfront, we stumbled upon a lesser-known but beautiful spot—the H.U. Lee International Gate and Garden.
Tucked away at the corner of the Statehouse Convention Center at 7 Statehouse Plaza, this landmark honors Arkansas’s connection to martial arts. The ornate gate and surrounding sculptures make for great photo opportunities, and the peaceful garden setting was a lovely break from walking.
We spent about 15 minutes here, taking pictures and appreciating this quiet, meaningful space that many visitors might otherwise miss.
Julius Breckling Riverfront Park: Scenic Walks and Family Activities
Our final stop was Julius Breckling Riverfront Park, one of the most popular outdoor attractions in Downtown Little Rock.

We started by checking out the First Security Amphitheater, then walked toward the Junction Bridge and the iconic Little Rock marker. While you can climb a long flight of stairs to access the bridge, we decided to skip that part this time.

From there, we explored the children’s activity area, which is great for families, and wrapped up our visit at the Tree House, snapping a few final pictures along the river. After about an hour in the park, we decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel—tired but happy.
River Market & Little Rock Streetcar: A Fun Ride Through the Twin Cities

From Riverfront Park, we walked opposite toward the River Market to board the Little Rock Streetcar at the River Market Avenue stop.

The streetcar turned out to be a fun and relaxing way to explore the city. It runs in a loop with about 15 stops, connects the twin cities of Little Rock and North Little Rock, and best of all, it’s completely free to use. We completed the full loop, enjoying the views and getting a feel for both cities, before returning to the same stop.

It was a great way to end the day before heading back to the hotel, especially since it gave us a different perspective of the city without more walking.
