San Francisco is a city best explored on foot, and staying close to its iconic waterfront can make a big difference. During our recent trip, we stayed at Marriott Vacation Club San Francisco at Fisherman’s Wharf, hoping for a comfortable, well-located base for sightseeing. While the hotel delivered exceptionally on location and overall comfort, a few practical drawbacks stood out during our stay. Here’s our first-hand experience to help you decide if this hotel is right for your San Francisco trip.
Prime Location at Fisherman’s Wharf
One of the biggest highlights of staying at Marriott Vacation Club San Francisco is its excellent location right at Fisherman’s Wharf. Many of the city’s iconic attractions are just a short walk away.

- Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and Lombard Street are easily walkable
- The Ferry Building, Chinatown, and Coit Tower are about a 10–12 minute ride by bus or tram
- Union Square is roughly a 15-minute cab ride
Being so centrally located made sightseeing extremely convenient, especially when traveling with family.
Check-In Experience: Quick and Hassle-Free
We arrived at the hotel around 6 PM, and the check-in process was smooth and efficient. There was no waiting, and we were quickly assigned Room 241, which was a good start after a long day of travel.
However, once we reached the second floor, we realized that our room was at the far end of the corridor. Dragging luggage over carpet all the way to the last room was not something we expected—especially when we later came to know that rooms closer to the elevator were available.
Room Review: Space, Comfort, and Lighting

The twin bedroom was spacious, which we appreciated. A tree partially blocked the view from the room, but that wasn’t a deal breaker for us.
We had read Google reviews mentioning city and traffic noise, but we didn’t find the room noisy at all. The hotel does provide earplugs and eye masks, which was a thoughtful touch, though we didn’t feel the need to use them.
One drawback was that the room felt quite dark, even during the day. Better lighting would have made the space more comfortable.
In-Room Amenities: Coffee, Comfort, and Convenience
A small but enjoyable detail for me was the Starbucks coffee packs provided in the room. Having good coffee readily available was something I genuinely enjoyed throughout our stay.
Guest Activities and Events
The hotel regularly organizes guest activities and events, which adds a nice touch to the overall experience. During the week, they host things like:
- Live musical events
- Wine tastings
- Ice-cream and chocolate tasting sessions
They also provide a weekly events calendar, which helps plan your evenings.
Hotel Amenities: Water, Ice, and Laundry Facilities
The hotel offers water and ice dispensers on each floor, which is very convenient.
However, the free laundry facility was by far the biggest downside of our stay.
- Only 2 washers and 2 dryers for a hotel with 200+ rooms is extremely inadequate
- The laundry room closes after 9 PM
- Wait times were often hours long, which is the last thing you want while on vacation with family
In our case, the dryer stopped mid-cycle due to an error, leaving us with damp clothes. Other guests mentioned this happens frequently, likely due to continuous heavy usage.
If the hotel increased the number of washers and dryers or even made the service chargeable with better availability, it would become a much more usable amenity.
Breakfast Options at Marriott Vacation Club San Francisco

The hotel does not offer a full buffet breakfast. Instead, they provide complimentary cakes, muffins, cookies, and coffee in the morning. While this is a nice gesture, it may not be sufficient if you’re looking for a proper breakfast before heading out.
Would I Stay Here Again?
Next time, I would likely explore other hotels nearby, as Fisherman’s Wharf has many options, including several other Marriott properties. That said, this hotel does get some important things right.
Final Verdict: Is Marriott Vacation Club San Francisco Worth It?
Pros:
- Outstanding location at Fisherman’s Wharf
- Spacious rooms and comfortable beds
- Quiet rooms despite being in a busy area
- Complimentary activities and events
Cons:
- Poorly planned laundry facilities
- Rooms can feel dark
- A long walk to some rooms from the elevator
Marriott Vacation Club San Francisco delivers where it matters most—location, room comfort, and easy access to top attractions like Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. However, practical issues such as limited laundry facilities and darker room lighting may impact longer stays. If you’re visiting San Francisco for a short city break and plan to spend most of your time exploring, this hotel works well. For extended stays or travelers who value convenience amenities, nearby alternatives may be worth considering.
